Ice Climbing: 11. Falling Considerations
52s
In this video we talk about the risk of a leader fall—which is particularly dangerous on ice. Falling with so many sharp items is a bad idea. This is why it is important to top rope a lot, in order to build technical skills well above the level at which you lead ice.
1. Keep your feet away from the ice. Catching the front point of your crampon on the ice while falling is a sure way to snap an ankle—which is the most common injury for ice climbers.
2. Hold onto your ice tools. You’ll be hosed if your tool is still hanging 20 feet above you.
