Gym Top Rope Climbing: 5. How to Top Rope Belay
1m 13s
In this video we review how to top rope belay. To begin, position your hands by grabbing onto the rope with your non-dominant hand (feeler hand) about chin level, and your dominant hand (brake hand) three fingers below the belay device.
Step 1: The feeler hand and the brake hand move past each other in order to take up the slack.
Step 2: The brake hand goes into brake position, down by your hips.
Step 3: The feeler hand will grab onto the rope about 3 fingers below the belay device.
Step 4: The brake hand will slide up to the feeler hand.
At this point you can re-set your feeler hand to about chin level and repeat steps 1-4 to continue belaying the climbing. It is important to note that you must always have at least one (or both) hands on the brake at all times. If done correctly, the right hand never comes off the rope.
