In this video we review how to create tape gloves for crack climbing. Tape gloves are used to protect the back of your hand when crack climbing. Climbers will typically use tape gloves when crack climbing for multiple consecutive days, especially on rough or sharp rock (i.e. sandstone) in dryer climates. Alternatively, climbers may also chose to use rubber “hand jammies.”

See below for instructions on how to create a tape glove for crack climbing:

Step 1: Pre-tear 5 strips of tape, each about a forearm in length.

Step 2: One at a time, apply each strip to the back of your hand by starting at base of your wrist, just below the wrist joint. Extend the tape up and around one finger, and back down to the base of the wrist (1 strip of tape per digit). See above video for demonstration.

Step 3: Complete the tape glove by applying 2-3 full wraps of tape around the wrist, being careful not to wrap so tight as to cut off circulation.

Repeat on the other hand and you’re ready to send!

Tip - Reuse the same gloves by cutting the tape at the wrist to remove. Then you only need a little tape to re-secure the tape around your wrist again!
