Aid Climbing: 7. Jumaring Over Edges and Roofs
1m 3s
While jugging a pitch, you will likely encounter numerous obstacles. Roofs and protruding edges are examples.
When jugging through a roof, it’s important to place your jugs just past or just before the edge—as opposed to stopping directly on it.
Step 1: Approach the edge and stop just short of it with both jumars.
Step 2: Stand tall in your lower jumar/aider and slide the upper one past the edge while leaning slightly back so that the rope pulls away from the wall, thereby allowing the upper jumar a smooth transition past the roof.
Step 3: Once the upper jug is past you can climb up the aider which is attached to it and then re adjust your lower one so that it is past the edge as well.
Jugging over roofs should be almost as easy as jugging an overhanging line.
On a traverse, you will need to perform a “lower out,” or some type of pendulum maneuver, which will then set you up to jug straight up again. For more on this see our video on “How to Pendulum & Lower Out While Cleaning”, to learn how to do it like a pro.

Please remember, climbing is inherently dangerous. Climb at your own risk.
