Aid Climbing: 1. General Aid Gear
4m 19s
In this video we look at the gear it takes to climb big walls using aid climbing techniques.
Aid Climbing Harness - This is bigger, and has a thicker padded waist band and leg loops than a normal climbing harness for added comfort.
Double Gear Sling - This gear sling has two shoulder straps to evenly distribute the weight of the gear across both shoulders instead of just one. Some designs include a full strength buckle which allows the double gear sling to serve as a chest harness as well. This is recommended for aid climbing, as it can be rigged to help prevent accidental backwards somersault falls when that is a concern.
2 Jumars - Also called Ascenders or Jugs. These are used to help climbers climb fixed lines without sliding back down the rope.
2 Daisy Chains - Either pocketed or adjustable.
Fifi Hook OR Lanyard w/ one Locking and one Key Lock Carabiner - For clipping into your gear while leading.
Belay Device - Standard ATC Guide and a GriGri are recommended.
Pair of Gloves - Used for protecting your hands while aiding and cleaning.
Set of Aiders - Traditional ladder style or 5-step aiders.
Chalk Bag - For moments when you can free climb out of the aiders or use a hybrid of aid and free climbing (free climbing almost always goes faster!)
Footwear - Technical rock climbing shoes, if applicable. For more intense aid climbing you’ll want stiff, sticky rubber shoes to help climb moderate level grades. Approach shoes work great.
Helmet - Critical to protect your head from falling rocks or a potential upside-down
“whipper” (or fall).

Please remember, climbing is inherently dangerous. Climb at your own risk.
